Ukraine invasion has been a ‘strategic disaster’ for Russia, White House says

The first six weeks of the war in Ukraine spell out a clear story: The invasion has been a clear strategic failure for Vladimir Putin and Russia, according to the White House.

Director of Communications Kate Bedingfield told reporters Thursday that Western sanctions and low morale are spelling out a disaster for Putin’s forces.

PUTIN MAY BE SELF-ISOLATING AND PLACING ADVISERS ON HOUSE ARREST, BIDEN SAYS

“Writ large, we have seen that this invasion has been a strategic failure for Putin and for Russia,” Bedingfield said. “They’re working to redefine the initial aims of their invasion, and we’ve seen time and again that the sanctions that have been applied are exacting extreme costs on their economy.”

President Joe Biden said earlier Thursday that Putin may be self-isolating and placing advisers on house arrest, which came on the heels of reports some advisers may now be misleading him.

“We have seen incontrovertible evidence that this has been a strategic disaster for Russia,” Bedingfield added.

Several reporters attempted follow-up questions, but she mostly pointed back to her previous statements about the war.

“Putin himself has said that the sanctions have imposed unprecedented costs on the Russian economy,” Bedingfield said. “Our role in this is to continue to strengthen Ukraine on the battlefield as we’ve been doing with an unprecedented amount of security assistance, and to continue to strengthen their hand at the negotiating table.”
