Former White House strategist Steve Bannon wants President Trump to order his Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to hand over documents requested by Congress within 72 hours, or fire him.
Bannon told The Hill that Rosenstein is “clearly obstructing justice” by not turning over the documents.
“If he doesn’t do it in 72 hours, he’s fired. I’d fire him,” he said.
House conservatives last week filed a resolution to impeach Rosenstein, accusing the Justice Department of withholding “embarrassing documents and information” related to the Russia investigation and the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server. The efforts quickly fizzled out due to lack of support.
Bannon also called special counsel Robert Mueller “a good man” as the former FBI director helming the Russia investigation faces intensified attacks from the president and his allies.
Trump has accused Mueller of being “totally conflicted” amid the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Over the weekend, Trump claimed the two had a “very nasty” and “contentious” business relationship, but has offered few details as to what he means.
Mueller is “a good man, a combat-veteran Marine,” Bannon told The Hill.
However, Bannon said the investigation should be “brought to a conclusion” because there was “obviously no collusion,” adding that Mueller should release a report on his findings before the midterm elections in November.
“Let the American people, on Nov. 6, let them decide,” Bannon said. “They are going to say that is too thin a reed to hang anything serious on.”
Bannon and Trump have had a contentious relationship since the former Trump adviser spoke critically of the president and his family to author Michael Wolff for his book Fire and Fury.
