Green Day took the stage Sunday evening at the American Music Awards and broke into an anti-Trump chant during their performance in Los Angeles.
In the middle of their hit song “Band Bang,” jumped into “Born To Die 2016” by punk band MDC. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong led a chant with the words, “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA.”
The song has recently been popularized by students across the U.S. protesting Donald Trump’s election victory. The anti-Trump line comes from an update to MDC’s original song, “Born To Die,” released in the early 1980s. The original lyrics are: “No war, No KKK, No fascist USA.”
Sunday’s performance wasn’t the first time members of Green Day have expressed their disapproval of Trump and his supporters. Earlier this month, the band changed the lyrics of their 2004 single “American Idiot” during a performance at the 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards, altering “subliminal mind-fuck America” to “subliminal mind-Trump America.”
In August, Armstrong said “The worst problem I see about Trump is who his followers are.” He added: “I actually feel bad for them, because they’re poor, working-class people who can’t get a leg up. They’re pissed off and he’s preyed on their anger. He just said, ‘You have no options and I’m the only one, and I’m going to take care of it myself.’ I mean, that’s f—king Hitler, man!”
