Keith Ellison blasts Trump for subpoena from DOJ

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison blasted President Donald Trump and his administration on Tuesday for the subpoena he received from the Department of Justice. Ellison slammed the move, calling it “highly irregular” and inferring it was politically motivated.

He posted his response to the subpoena on his social media accounts on Tuesday and said they were related to his office’s work on federal immigration enforcement.

“Less than two weeks ago, federal agents shot and killed a Minnesotan in broad daylight,” said Ellison. “Now, instead of seriously investigating the killing of Renee Good, Trump is weaponizing the justice system against any leader who dares stand up to him.”

“Today, my office has received a criminal grand jury subpoena from the Department of Justice,” Ellison said. “It is a subpoena for records and documents related to my office’s work with respect to federal immigration enforcement, not for me personally. Everything about this is highly irregular, especially the fact that this comes shortly after my office sued the Trump Administration to challenge their illegal actions within Minnesota.”

Ellison, along with Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, has come under fire for a variety of reasons, including allegations of negligence regarding government-subsidized statewide programs in Minnesota and federal illegal immigration enforcement operations. Walz and Frey also received subpoenas earlier this week.

Ellison claimed that the reason for the subpoena was not legitimate but instead an act of political “retaliation and revenge.” He also said that the president was “coming after the Minnesota people.”

“Let’s be clear about why this is happening: Donald Trump is coming after the people of Minnesota and I’m standing in his way,” Ellison said in the post. “I will not be intimidated, and I will not stop working to protect Minnesotans from Trump’s campaign of retaliation and revenge.”

Ellison did not explain what he meant by Trump “coming after the people of Minnesota.”
