Fighting D.C. childhood obesity, one salad bar at a time

The District has the highest childhood obesity rate in the country, if you believe the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (and yes, we do). But what to do about it?

Get them to a salad bar, says Dole Food Co. partnering with the United Fresh Produce Association to unveil a new salad bar at the D.C. Bilingual School at 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 21. Dole has donated salad bars to several other D.C. schools, such as Walker-Jones Elementary, River Terrace Elementary and Brown Education Campus.

But what if a head of lettuce and a a bucket of chick peas aren’t sexy enough for the Justin Bieber generation? Never fear: Local celebrity chefs Cathal Armstrong and Spike Mendelsohn will join USDA Food and Nutrition Service Administrator Julie Paradis at the celebration Thursday.
