‘Where Was the Pushback?’

I thought readers might be interested in this email I received today from a thoughtful Trump supporter (“for now”):

Mr. Kristol, I know that you would very much like a president who held true to conservative values, but I want to share with you why I support Donald Trump in one word: Pushback. For the past 8 years I have watched the Republican Party get kicked around and maligned and the last two election cycles were just horrendous. Not to mention all the terrible press in between. I kept asking myself where was the pushback? When the Dems were singing their “Republicans hate women” song (with its myriad verses), where was the pushback? When Harry Reid stood up and announced he had “heard” that Romney hadn’t paid taxes, where was the pushback? When Harry Reid talks about the Republicans being the obstructionists, where is the pushback? Well Donald Trump pushes back in a way that doesn’t relegate his response to the last paragraph of the story with “a spokesperson denied the allegations.” At the start of this current race, Hillary Clinton started on the old “Republicans hate women” song again. Then she called Trump a sexist. His response shut her up big time. Have you heard anything about the Republican war on women since? No, neither have I. I did digging and found out it was actually Harry Reid who was the obstructionist, blocking anything from coming to a vote – even from his own Democrats! Did you hear anything about that in the national press? No, neither did I. Trump doesn’t let people get away with phony allegations or twisting his words. And that is what I like about him. With more than 75-85% of the press describing themselves as liberal or very liberal, being a nice guy just doesn’t do it. Sure Kasich has done a bang up job as governor, I really liked Scott Walker standing up to all those pushy unions. But with any one of the other Republicans on the ticket, we will lose this election just like we have the last two. I don’t want that. I desperately don’t want that. And you know what? Trump is all out there, everyone knows about his marriages and bankruptcies and all his faults. No, he’s not a conservative in the sense that you would like, but he stands up and fights back and that’s what we need. I don’t like everything he says, but somehow when the left calls him a xenophobic racist, he doesn’t care and laughs it off, like it should be dismissed. For eight years now, all I’ve seen is the Republicans sit there and take the lies and smears. And I’m tired of seeing that. So for now, Trump has my support. I just wanted you to know why; hopefully this might help give you a different perspective. Respectfully, Becky C. Denver, Colorado
