A congressional Republican called on President-elect Trump to stop saying that millions of votes were cast illegally without any proof of such large-scale voter fraud taking place.
Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., said on CNN Tuesday that Trump needs to accept that he lost the popular vote to State Hillary Clinton and stop using Twitter to cast doubt on an election he won.
“I don’t think it behooves the American people or the American electorate to sit and cast stones on what happened on Nov. 8. Let it go,” Duffy said. “And, I don’t understand why Mr. Trump is sitting back and talking about an election he actually won. Winners don’t want to sit back and question the results.”
Duffy added he’s disgusted by recount efforts in his state led by Green Party candidate Jill Stein that have been joined by the Clinton campaign. The Clinton campaign announced this weekend it would participate as observers in the recount to ensure a fair process was followed.
Duffy said this was evidence Clinton is not accepting the results, despite her campaign stating it didn’t expect the final result in Wisconsin to change. He said it’s time for Clinton to tell Stein, who based her campaign on slamming Clinton, to stop the recount.
“If she was a leader, she would say ‘Jill Stein, enough,'” Duffy said.
Duffy added his voice to the furor over Trump’s tweet Tuesday morning calling for the revoking of citizenship or jail time for burning the American flag as well.
He said he doesn’t like that people burn the flag, but he agrees with the Supreme Court’s decision in Texas v. Johnson that it shouldn’t be illegal.
“I love my flag, I love what it stands for and I hate those who want to go out and burn it, but I think the court is probably right that we want to protect those people who want to protest and their rights to demonstrate with disgracing our flag,” Duffy said.
“I don’t think we want to make this a legal issue and I think the court is probably right.”
