The Powerball jackpot set to be the world’s biggest-ever prize will be drawn today, amounting to over $1.5 billion.
Powerball announced on Friday that the jackpot would be drawn at an estimated $1.6 billion. The participating California Lottery tweeted on Friday that the jackpot breaks the Guinness world record for largest national lottery jackpot.
“Be a part of history and play for your chance at this HUGE jackpot,” the organization wrote. “Draws tomorrow, Saturday November 5. Good luck, players!”
POWERBALL PRIZE JUMPS PAST HALF A BILLION DOLLARS
The “greatest jackpot in a national lottery” was in January 2016, when three tickets in California, Florida, and Tennessee won a $1.586 billion jackpot.
Saturday’s jackpot has a cash value of $782.4 million. It will be drawn at 10:59 p.m. EST in Tallahassee. It is the 40th Powerball drawing since the jackpot was won in Pennsylvania in August, according to Powerball.
If there is no winner, Powerball will “tie the game record for the number of consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner,” per the lottery operator.
“This Powerball game is delivering exactly what our players want,” Powerball Product Group Chairman Drew Svitko said in a statement. “We are witnessing history in the making with this $1.6 billion jackpot! What’s also exciting is that this run has already created millions of winners, including nearly 100 players who have won prizes worth $1 million or more.”
