Andrew Yang announces next step after failed presidential bid

Former 2020 candidate Andrew Yang is launching a nonprofit group to advocate for policies he championed during his failed presidential campaign.

Yang announced his new venture, called Humanity Forward, on Thursday. The group will push for policies such as recognizing personal data as property and establishing a universal basic income, according to the New York Times.

“We knew we wanted to keep the movement growing. The only question was what form that would take,” Yang said. “I have to say, I’m super excited about it … My hands were tied as a political candidate, to some extent, and now I get to work.”

Humanity First will push for Yang’s politics in conferences and through a podcast with the former Democratic presidential candidate tentatively titled Let Yang Speak.

Yang has already gathered several large financiers to donate to his nonprofit group, such as venture capitalist Albert Wenger and entrepreneur Susan Danziger, who together pledged $500,000 to the group.

Yang dropped out of the presidential race on Feb. 11 after a disappointing showing in the New Hampshire Democratic primary. Yang’s long-shot bid never gained much momentum, but the relatively unknown tech entrepreneur outlasted governors, senators, and other experienced politicians.

Yang has since joined CNN as a contributor to comment on the 2020 election cycle. He has also been in discussions with the campaign of former Vice President Joe Biden to potentially join Biden as a running mate in the general election. Yang has also weighed leveraging his political gains from his presidential campaign into a run for mayor of New York City.
