CNN International anchor Christiane Amanpour suggested in a video posted online on Monday that coverage of Hillary Clinton’s health episode outside a 9/11 memorial service is sexist.
“Can’t a girl have a sick day or two? Don’t get me started because when it comes to overqualified women having to try a hundred times harder than under qualified men to get a break, even a level playing field … Well, we know that story,” said Amanpour during her eponymous show.
Clinton’s campaign team initially claimed that the Democratic presidential nominee “overheated,” later admitting she was diagnosed with pneumonia. Clinton disappeared for 90 minutes Sunday, leaving the press with no knowledge of her whereabouts. The health scare comes after weeks of speculation over the candidate’s physical condition, bringing what were once dismissed as fringe conspiracy theories to mainstream concern. Clinton has already canceled some of her campaign events for this week.
Amanpour argued that the media is suffering from “another debilitating case of indignant outrage” and pointed to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s issues with transparency.
“Surely this can’t be a case of a human being having an off day. Nope, like so many things Hillary, the media are having a field day. Off to the races with another debilitating case of indignant outrage,” said Amanpour. “This must be Clinton conspiracy to fool them with a total transparency breakdown. Talk about transparency breakdown, what about Donald Trump’s tax returns? Where are they?”
