‘Poor bastard’: Trump mocks exit of ‘nasty’ Beto from 2020 race

President Trump taunted Beto O’Rourke as “nasty” and “pathetic” after the former Texas congressman announced he was ending his 2020 presidential run.

“Beto, oh that poor bastard,” Trump said Friday at a campaign rally in Mississippi. “Poor pathetic guy. He was pathetic. Remember the arms were flailing?”

He continued, “I used to watch him, but when he came onto the really big stage, this crazy stage, I noticed he was flailing with the arms and standing on tables. He was standing on countertops. I said, ‘Does he ever, like, stand on the floor and speak?’ But he’s waving his arms going crazy, and I said, ‘What the hell is he doing? What is he on?'”

The president went on to mock O’Rourke’s cover story in Vanity Fair in which the Texas Democrat said he was “just born to be in it [the 2020 race].”

“But Beto was nasty, and he said that he was born for it. Like he was born from heaven, he came down. And if that’s the case, some really bad things happened because he made a total fool of himself,” Trump said.

The president also took aim at O’Rourke’s policies, particularly his stance on gun control, oil, and wanting to tax churches. Trump said O’Rourke “was against religion.”

The comments come as O’Rourke announced Friday he is ending his 2020 campaign because he did not see a path to victory. The former contender was polling at 2% when he dropped out, according to RealClearPolitics.
