Bono: Trump is potentially ‘the worst idea that ever happened to America’

“Look, America is like the best idea the world ever came up with. But Donald Trump is potentially the worst idea that ever happened to America, potentially,” Bono said during an interview on CBS “This Morning.”

The politically active Irish rock star said that Trump, rather than making America great again, is “dangerous” because he has “hijacked” both the party and the ideals for which the country stands.

“It could destroy it … because America’s not just a country,” said Bono, who has worked with Democratic and Republican presidents in the past, especially with respect to AIDS research and debt relief for third world countries. “America is an idea, and that idea is bound up in justice and equality for all. Equality and justice for all, you know? I think he’s hijacked the party, and I think he’s trying to hijack the idea of America. And I think it’s bigger than all of us. I think it’s, this is really dangerous.”

Yet he refused to critique the candidate’s supporters because he shares their concerns that the political establishment is not being responsive to their worries about the future.

“I would not diminish Trump supporters or underestimate their angst, because I feel that in a way, they have correctly assessed that the center parties haven’t yet become clear,” Bono said.

Though he acknowledged he cannot vote in the election and refused to tell anyone how to vote since he is a citizen of another country, Bono said he believes he has a voice because whoever is in the Oval Office can dramatically affect the “very real problems facing not just America, but facing Europe.”
