D.C. Council to vote on paying millions for furloughs

A proposal to pay District employees for four furlough days they were required to take last year is poised for D.C. Council consideration yet again.

At-Large Councilman Michael Brown served notice on Wednesday that he’ll seek a vote at a meeting next week on a proposal he has floated before: Pay two furlough days immediately, pay the remaining two later and add millions to the Housing Production Trust Fund.

Brown was not immediately available for comment.

The issue of furlough repayments has sharply divided the council in recent weeks. Last week, lawmakers defeated two compromise proposals, including one from Brown.

City leaders ordered the furlough days last year in a bid to close a massive budget shortfall.

Paying workers for the furlough days, which labor unions have advocated, could cost about $22 million, legislators have said.
