The U.S. Naval Academy expelled its 13th midshipman in an ongoing crackdown on synthetic marijuana, officials announced Wednesday.
Cmdr. Joe Carpenter said the male student was expelled last week for use or possession of the drug, which is banned by the Defense Dependent and the Navy, the AP reports.
The Academy has been investigating students suspected of possessing or using synthetic marijuana, which does not show up on the stringent school’s drug tests, since last fall.
School officials have been holding Academy forums in its efforts to irradicate the drug from the elite Annapolis institution.
Sold in drug paraphernalia shops and on the Internet, synthetic pot consists of organic leaves coated with chemicals that achieve a marijuana-like high when smoked.
