CHANGES COMING TO MILITARY LICENSE PLATES
Several changes are coming to military license plates issued to veterans and military members living in Florida. Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday signed into law a bill that mandates redesigns and other changes to the more than dozen plates now in use. The bill renames the “Korean Conflict Veteran” plate to the “Korean War Veteran” plate and requires the plate to be redesigned. It also requires the redesign of a plate for Vietnam veterans.
WOMAN INDICTED IN 2-YEAR-OLD GIRL’S DEATH
A South Florida woman accused of killing her domestic partner’s 2-year-old daughter has been indicted on first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and child-abuse charges. The Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office announced the grand jury’s decision Thursday. Officials say 40-year-old Kimberly Lucas killed 2-year-old Elliana Lucas-Jamason and then tried to kill the girl’s 10-year-old brother on Memorial Day.
MAN GUILTY IN FATAL DUI; FACES 15 YEARS
A Tampa Bay area man has been convicted in a fatal drunken driving crash. A Pasco County jury found 59-year-old David Wilson Smith guilty Wednesday of DUI manslaughter. He faces up to 15 years in prison at a July 25 sentencing.
MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER PIT BULL ATTACK
Two pit bulls have been euthanized after authorities say they attacked a man in South Florida. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue reports that the dogs attacked a man in the driveway of a vacant Lantana home Thursday morning. Officials say two neighbors heard the man’s cries for help and attempted to drive the dogs away without success. The dogs’ owner eventually came out of his home and was able to drag the animals away.
COURT: RED LIGHT CAMERAS PRE-2010 WERE ILLEGAL
Florida cities that installed red light cameras before the state authorized them could have to return millions of dollars in fines now that the Supreme Court has ruled they were illegal. The court ruled Thursday that red light camera ordinances in Aventura and Orlando violated a state law that requires uniform traffic enforcement. The decision only applies to cities that installed red light cameras before a 2010 law allowing them was enacted.
