A D.C. man has been indicted for murder after an argument over a chicken sandwich ended in the fatal stabbing of a customer.
Ricoh McClain, 30, was indicted in a Maryland court on Tuesday for the November death of 28-year-old Kevin Davis, according to WTOP. The stabbing, which happened at a Popeyes in Oxon Hill, Maryland, came the day after the fast-food chain rereleased its popular chicken sandwich.
Authorities said that Davis attempted to cut the line at the store to get his hands on the newly released sandwich, which prompted McClain to become upset and get in an altercation with Davis.
When the argument moved to the parking lot of the restaurant, police say McClain stabbed Davis and fled the scene.
“Deadly violence erupted in 15 seconds,” said police chief Hank Stawinski last month.
Tuesday’s grand jury indicted McClain on common-law murder, which Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy’s office said would allow prosecutors to seek convictions on charges from manslaughter to first-degree murder.
The popularity of the chicken sandwiches has caused other flare-ups, including in Texas where a man allegedly pulled a gun after a group of people learned the store ran out of sandwiches. In Tennessee, a man became so enraged by the lack of sandwiches that he filed a $5,000 lawsuit against the chicken chain, accusing it of false advertising and deceptive business practices.
