Hillary Clinton: James Comey’s letter cost me the white female vote

Hillary Clinton said Monday the letter former FBI Director James Comey sent 11 days before the election stating an investigation was being reopened into her emails cost her the white female vote.

“I got more white female votes than Obama did — white female votes than president Obama did in 2012,” she said. “I personally believe I was doing well enough with white women before the Comey letter but it stopped my momentum and played into the concerns that women have about whether they are making a mistake with their vote.”

Clinton was speaking in Washington, D.C. as a part of an event about her new book about the election, What Happened.

Clinton said white women often question their vote choices and want the most information they can possibly get. She said when the letter from Comey was released, it caused many white women to doubt her as a candidate.

“Taking it to the last month of this campaign, all of a sudden people are being told you know what, something is going on,” Clinton said. “They are going to investigate her again. We could see that a lot of women in particular turned away. They were discouraged. I do not blame them. They did not know what to believe. It is outrageous what happened.”
