Interior Secretary Deb Haaland recovering after breaking leg on hiking trip

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland is recovering after she broke her leg while hiking over the weekend.

Haaland was on a hike in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia when she suffered the injury on Sunday. A medical evaluation performed Monday morning confirmed a break to her left fibula, according to the Interior Department.

“She is grateful to Park staff, the U.S. Park Police, and the team at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for their excellent care,” the department said in a statement, adding that Haaland will resume her schedule virtually this afternoon.

Haaland, a former U.S. representative from New Mexico, was sworn in as interior secretary on March 16, 2021.

She is the first Native American to lead the department, which oversees recreational, mineral leasing, and other activities on federal lands and waters.
