Five dead following mass shooting in McGregor, Texas

At least five people were killed in a Thursday morning shooting in McGregor, Texas, according to police.

The suspect is in custody, and there is no longer a threat to public safety in the area, police said. The shooting took place at about 8 a.m. local time near the 900 block of Monroe. Police have not yet divulged the identities of those involved.

“It’s over, but of course, we want the successful healing of the community. This is tragic news to actually have to give out,” a law enforcement official said during a press briefing. “It is one of those situations where [our] thoughts and prayers are with the community.”

During the shooting, an unnamed man fatally shot his wife and two children, KWTX reported. The suspect was subsequently shot by a responding officer and later transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Two others, both women, were found dead nearby, according to the report.

Schools in the area briefly entered a lockdown after gunfire was heard, according to KWTX. Troy Independent School District said its middle school is canceling sporting events in response to the shooting.

“All middle school, freshman, and junior varsity football games have been canceled tonight due to the tragic shooting in the McGregor community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved,” the school said in a Facebook post.

Officers from the McGregor Police Department, McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Crawford Police Department responded to the attack, Fox 44 reported.

The motivation for the attack is not clear. An investigation into the matter is underway, according to police.
