Twitter withdraws lawsuit against Trump administration

Twitter withdrew its lawsuit against the Trump administration over an anti-Trump account on Friday one day after it sued.

According to a court document, Twitter said because U.S. Customs and Border Protection withdrew a request for a summons, it was “voluntarily” withdrawn all claims against it.

Twitter had sued in response to Homeland Security Department officials demanding that the social media company reveal who is behind an anonymous account that has been critical of federal immigration policies.

The lawsuit has been filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. It shows that DHS reached out in March about the identity of the @ALT_USCIS account, which has over 143,000 followers — an increase of over 100,000 followers over the last 24 hours.

Twitter claimed that the government “unlawfully abusing a limited-purpose investigatory tool” to “unmask” the identity of the user behind the account.

In response to the news, @ALT_USCIS tweeted: “We want to thank @twitter and @aclu for standing up for the right of free anonymous speech. Thank you resistance for standing up for us.”
