Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in the process of recovering from a pneumonia diagnosis, his spokesman said, after being hospitalized in Florida on Sunday.
Giuliani’s pneumonia battle was complicated by an underlying respiratory condition he was diagnosed with after helping New Yorkers during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center when he was mayor, according to his spokesman.

“Mayor Rudy Giuliani is recovering from pneumonia. On September 11th, Mayor Giuliani ran toward the towers to help those in need, which later led to a diagnosis of restrictive airway disease,” Giuliani spokesman Ted Goodman said in a statement. “This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition.”
Goodman announced that Giuliani, 81, is now able to breathe on his own, but he is still in “critical but stable condition.”
“Mayor Giuliani is the ultimate fighter—as he has demonstrated throughout his life—and he is winning this battle,” Goodman said. “His family deeply appreciates the outpouring of love and support. The mayor believes in the power of prayer, and we are feeling that strength today.”
Giuliani, who served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, visited the site of the World Trade Center attacks six times on Sept. 11.
“I needed to see with my own eyes the disaster site and our rescue operations, and get a sense of what we would be dealing with in the months to come,” Giuliani wrote in his book Leadership.
