SCIENCE STANDARDS
TOPEKA, Kan. — While some Kansas educators see the state’s new science standards for public schools as a leap forward for encouraging innovative teaching and strengthening class offerings, a nonprofit education group thinks the opposite is the case. The Thomas B. Fordham Institute gives a C grade to the new, multistate standards adopted by Kansas, a full letter grade lower than the state’s previous standards. John Hanna
KANSAS-TAXES
TOPEKA — Gov. Sam Brownback is scheduled to sign legislation making additional cuts to the Kansas income tax rates over the next five years, continuing his efforts to eliminate income taxes entirely. The Republican governor will sign the bill into law during a ceremony Thursday in Overland Park, repeating the process later in the day in Wichita. John Milburn
HOLLISTER-CHARGES DISMISSED
TOPEKA — A woman whose husband was convicted of killing a Kansas woman is no longer facing charges of helping him avoid arrest. Charges were dismissed Wednesday against Rebecca Hollister, wife of Roger Hollister, who was convicted of killing 58-year-old Patricia Kimmi of rural Horton in 2009. Rebecca Hollister, of Topeka, was charged in March with aiding a felon. Prosecutors had alleged she tried to help her husband avoid arrest and conviction after Kimmi’s death.

— CHILD SHOT — Wichita police say a 4-year-old boy is in stable condition at St. Francis Hospital after he was shot while sleeping in his home.
— PORN CASE-ATTORNEY — A Topeka man who faces more than 100 child pornography charges will get a new attorney.
— HOLCOMB-CONCEALED CARRY — Holcomb city officials have voted to delay implementing a new state law that allows concealed weapons in public buildings.
— DEA BEATING-LAWSUIT — A federal judge has rejected claims by a former Kansas City, Kan., police detective that he was punished for refusing to conceal a motorist’s beating by federal agents.
— KANSAS LAWMAN-DEMOLITION — The charred home of a former Kansas lawman convicted of killing his wife and setting fire to their house could be demolished before the end of the month.
