PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Pre-Civil War barracks on the grounds of the Plattsburgh Air Force Base have been added to a preservation organization’s list of the most threatened historic resources in New York state.
Congressman Bill Owens joined local officials and leaders of the Preservation League of New York State at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh for the group’s announcement Tuesday regarding the Old Stone Barracks being added to the “Seven to Save” list.
The 176-year-old building is the oldest at the former air base, which closed in 1995.
A Canadian developer bought the site in 2010 after it stood vacant for decades. A local group, Friends of the Old Stone Barracks, has a contract to purchase the property.
The Preservation League says it will work with the group on a protection and redevelopment plan for the site.
