Mike Pompeo won’t run for Kansas Senate seat: ‘It’s ruled out’

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he won’t run for the open Senate seat in Kansas next year, after weeks of speculation that he might try for it.

“It’s ruled out,” Pompeo said on NBC when pressed on whether a Senate run is possible.

Republicans floated Pompeo as Sen. Pat Roberts’ prefered successor after Roberts announced in January that he would be retiring from the Senate after his term ends in 2020.

Pompeo was a representative in Kansas’s fourth district from 2011-2017 before President Trump brought him on as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and later as secretary of state.

“I love Kansas,” Pompeo told “Today.” “I’m going to be the secretary of state as long as Trump gives me the opportunity to serve as America’s senior diplomat. I love doing what I’m doing and I have 75,000 warriors around the world trying to deliver for the American people.”
