Local charity confused with Salahi’s organization

What a difference a few words make.

Last week, The Washington Examiner reported about a settlement between the Commonwealth of Virginia and White House party crasher Tareq Salahi and his now-defunct fundraising organization Journey for the Cure Foundation. The settlement was over alleged violations of a Virignia law that regulates charitable organizations.

After the article ran, we received an email from Tracy Hobiena, president of Journey 4 A Cure (notice the difference in the middle two words), saying that because of The Examiner’s article, “our legitimate not-for-profit foundation has received a number of hateful messages assuming that our foundation is that of the Salahi family.”

Journey 4 A Cure is a Loudoun County-based not-for-profit organization that raises money for pediatric cancer research and quality of life enhancements for children undergoing treatment, according to organizational materials. The Examiner is actually listed as one of its sponsors on the charity’s website, as are Walmart, Giant. T.J. Maxx and others.

So to summarize: Journey for the Cure was Salahi’s organization that was accused of violating Virginia law, and Journey 4 A Cure is a local charity that is dedicated to pediatric cancer.
