Ex-Raven at wheel in hit-and-run

Javin Hunter, a former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver, was driving the car that struck and killed a man riding a scooter in Harford County, state police said.

Hunter, 27, a 2002 Ravens draft pick, was not arrested, nor was he charged, said Sgt. Russ Newell, a state police spokesman.

Police said they determined Hunter was driving at the time of the crash about at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, but did not say how. Investigators interviewed Hunter at the Bel Air barracks, but did not take him into custody, Newell said.

The state?s attorney would determine what, if any, charges would be filed, he said.

The crash killed Ellis George Spencer Jr., 53, of the White Marsh area, who had been riding a red, gas-powered scooter on Route 40 in Joppa when a black Chrysler 300 sedan with Michigan tags struck him and fled, state police said.

Spencer suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. He died at 11:51 a.m. Tuesday.

Police, following tips, found the car, owned by Hunter, in the Westview area of Baltimore County.

Hunter, a wide receiver who had played at Notre Dame, was drafted by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2002 draft. He appeared in five games as a rookie, making five catches for 35 yards and returning four kickoffs for 105 yards. He then went to the San Francisco 49ers, but no longer plays in the NFL, according to the league?s Web site.
