‘Lost a warrior’: Final hospital patient from El Paso Walmart shooting dies

The last remaining hospital patient from August’s mass shooting at a Texas Walmart has died.

Nine months after a gunman opened fire at a store location in El Paso, another victim in the shooting lost his life. Guillermo “Memo” Garcia, who was being treated at Del Sol Medical Center, passed away Saturday, his wife Jessica Coco Garcia shared on Sunday.

“Last night at 11:22 we lost a warrior but gained an angel. He fought long and hard, with the help of all his troops he won many battles but lost the war. I would like to thank the community for all the love, support, and prayers,” she said.

“His courage, his strength and his story have touched many lives, including those of our caregivers, who tirelessly fought with him and for him every step of the way,” Del Sol Medical Center CEO David Shimp added in a statement. “We are grieving with his family and with our community.”

Garcia’s death brings the death toll from the incident to 23. His wife was also “gravely injured” during the shooting, and the couple filed a lawsuit against Walmart in August.

The suspect in the shooting, Patrick Crusius, 21, faces capital murder charges in Texas, as well as federal hate crime charges. Before the attack, he allegedly posted an anti-immigrant manifesto online and later admitted to targeting Mexicans.
