Marines: One person sustained self-inflicted gunshot wound, shelter-in-place order lifted at California base

The U.S. Marine Corps said somebody sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday morning after reports of an active shooter at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California.

The individual, who was not identified, “is currently being treated and will be transported to a medical facility,” the Marines said on Twitter.

Initially, the Marines tweeted that they were “aware” of reports of there being an active shooter. In its latest missives just before 10 a.m. local time, the military branch confirmed a shelter-in-place order was lifted and that the incident is under investigation.

Earlier, the Marines also tweeted, “We cannot confirm a suspect in custody at this time.”

An automated warning was issued to people in the nearby area earlier in the day telling them they are at “serious risk,” according to video footage reported by the Express, a British tabloid.

The Twentynine Palms base is the largest base operated by the Marine Corps, with about 8,500 people living on the site. The base is about 150 miles east of Los Angeles, according to the Palm Springs Desert Sun.
