AT&T wireless customers briefly unable to call 911 in several states

AT&T customers in states around the country were briefly unable to call 911 from their cellphones, according to reports late Wednesday.

At 9:49 p.m. ET, AT&T tweeted that it was aware of an issue, but did not specify what it might be.

“Working to resolve ASAP. We apologize to those affected,” the company said.

About 42 minutes later, the company said it had “resolved” the issue.

Affected wireless customers included people in at least four states: Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas and Florida.

The Dallas Police Department said the outages were affecting parts of north Texas. They encouraged people to use an alternate number for emergency assistance. The Miami-Dade Police Department did the same.

Federal Communications Chairman Ajit Pai said his agency had received widespread reports of the outages, and that FCC public safety staff were also investigating the issue.
