A supplier for Apple was targeted by a ransomware attack on Tuesday when a shadowy Russian group demanded millions of dollars after claiming to have stolen product schematics.
Quanta Computer, a Taiwan-based supplier for the tech company, confirmed the breach but said it would have “no material impact on the company’s business operation. “
The Russian ransomware group REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, said in a dark web blog post on Tuesday that it had infiltrated Quanta Computer’s network, according to Bloomberg. They are reportedly asking for $50 million by May 1.

“Quanta Computer’s information security team has worked with external IT experts in response to cyber attacks on a small number of Quanta servers,” Quanta Computer told the outlet in a statement. “We’ve reported to and kept seamless communications with the relevant law enforcement and data protection authorities concerning recent abnormal activities observed. There’s no material impact on the company’s business operation.”
However, Bloomberg reports that the company did not specify if any of its data was stolen.
On Tuesday, the same day as a major product launch for Apple, the group began posting schematics of what appear to the outlet to be Macbooks designed as recently as March. They reportedly say they will keep posting data from the company until their demands are met.
