Md. Senate debates budget, alcohol sales tax

The Maryland Senate is debating the state’s $34 billion budget on Tuesday.

The Senate is considering amendments to the House version of the bill, which helps balance the budget by raising roughly $70 million in fees.

The Senate also is considering separate legislation that would gradually raise the sales tax on alcohol by 3 percent — from 6 percent to 9 percent — over the next three years, generating roughly $172 million by fiscal 2014.
