Rachel Maddow bashes conservative media for living ‘on a completely different planet’

Rachel Maddow dissed conservative media at large, claiming right-leaning outlets go to drastic lengths to shape narratives to their agenda.

The MSNBC host explained on her show Monday that she has been in the news business for more than a decade, claiming the conservative press underwent a transformation in that time and is no longer on the same page as the rest of the media.

“They were people who were coming at the news from a very pronounced right-wing view, perhaps a very partisan, pro-Republican Party view, but at least we were all doing the same kind of work, at least we were all covering the same stuff,” she began. “That’s how it started when I started doing this business, started working in this business. But over this past decade or so, steadily, that has decreased year after year to the point where now, even in times this weird, conservative media is like Earth 2.”

“All the rest of us are on Earth 1, and they are on a completely different planet in terms of what the news is and what it means to cover it,” she added. “And conservative media is as influential as they ever were, if not more so, when it comes to Republican elected officials and conservative voters in the Republican Party base. But the conservative media, the most influential parts of it, really are living in and describing and now promoting a completely different world than the one that all the rest of us live on, here on Earth 1.”

Later on in her monologue, Maddow noted how conservative media members have been “really, really excited about Sweden” because it didn’t implement a stay-at-home order to combat the coronavirus, but the country has faced a dramatic uptick in cases recently.

“It turns out the virus doesn’t care how cool that sounds,” she noted. “Our friends in conservative media are nevertheless in love with the idea that this is no big deal, that you can definitely reopen everything as soon as you don’t feel like dealing with all of this stuff anymore.”
