Harvey Weinstein taken to hospital on way to prison

The ambulance carrying former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to prison was instead redirected to a hospital.

Weinstein was on his way to Rikers Island when the ambulance went to Bellevue Hospital, Weinstein spokeswoman Juda Engelmayer told CNN Monday evening. The reason for the hospital visit was not immediately clear.

Weinstein, 67, was convicted of rape and sexual assault against two women earlier on Monday. Judge James Burke ordered that he be taken to jail immediately. He was handcuffed and led out of the courtroom without the walker he relied on for much of his trial and was later strapped to a stretcher and taken from the courthouse in an ambulance, according to the Associated Press.

The judge said he would ask for Weinstein to be held in the infirmary after his lawyers said he needs medical attention following back surgery that was unsuccessful.

Weinstein’s sentencing is scheduled for March 11. He faces up to 29 years in prison.
