Hallmark Channel announced the release of a Christmas movie that will feature a story centered on a gay couple adopting a child during the holidays.
In a statement released by the network this week, Hallmark Executive Vice President Michelle Vicary championed the film as part of the “most diverse representation of talent, narratives, and families” in company history.
“Our holiday table is bigger and more welcoming than ever,” Vicary said. “Our movies are rooted in warmth and positivity, meaningful connections, family gatherings, and seasonal traditions — a winning formula we hope will bring our millions of viewers much-needed levity and holiday cheer at the end of a tough year.”
The announcement comes after the network released its first-ever same-sex marriage film in August, titled Wedding Every Weekend. Hallmark’s decision also follows in the steps of competitor Lifetime announcing its holiday lineup would feature movies about gay and transgender romance.
The film is part of a dedicated campaign by the network to increase the programming of stories that emphasize nontraditional storylines about relationships and gender.
“Diversity and inclusion is a top priority for us and we look forward to making some exciting programming announcements in the coming months, including announcements about projects featuring LGBTQ storylines, characters, and actors,” the Hallmark Channel wrote in a statement to People in July.
The new programming follows the ouster of former president and chief executive Bill Abbott, who was forced to step down after the network pulled an advertisement that featured a same-sex couple getting married.
