Leading the way to success

Some people are born lucky. Others need a little help.

Mary Ann Masur, a life and business coach, has decided to help the not-so-lucky people out. Her new book, “Leadership Tips: 52 Weeks to Business and Personal Success,” is designed for people looking to lead a practical and effective life but are unsure where to start.

The book, which took Masur more than a year to compile from her personal experiences, takes everyday life situations and shares a lesson that relates to communication, leadership, team building or work/life balance.

“One comment I hear often is that people can relate to [the book] because they experience these things themselves,” Masur said.

Masur spent 17 years in the commercial real estate business before realizing her true calling ? business coaching. As president of the Junior League of Baltimore, Masur started giving talks on how to motivate volunteers, then moved on to speaking about employee motivation. In 2001, she founded Synergy, an organization developed to help people become “effective and fulfilled.” She left the real estate field in 2003 to start business coaching full-time.

Leadership Tips includes questions at the end of each chapter that can be used to help readers determine their personal solutions for life conflicts.

“People can customize it for themselves and use the book as a journal,” Masur said. “But it?s also a great tool for leading a team meeting. It makes it easy for the leaders to use the three questions to generate a conversation.”

Author Elizabeth Ridley said that Masur?s book is a “must-have. … Its advice is useful and easy to implement. [The book] guides the reader through a series of insightful and provocative questions that explore timeless truths about leadership, communication, business growth, life balance and other issues.”

The business coach said that her approach is a holistic one. “In order to get the results that someone wants to achieve, we have to look at the processes they have in place; we look at the individual who?s leading the team or organization. We look at their values, environment, their entire life combined wth how that?s impacting the business.

“I had a client who wanted to grow her business and was working almost24-7, but had eliminated all the things that were fun in her life and what we realized was that wasn?t attractive to clients,” Masur said. “When she started putting those things back into her life, she started to grow her business because she was more excited about her life, and that was attractive to others.”
