Unidentified person crossed militarized border from South Korea to North Korea

An unidentified individual crossed from South Korea into North Korea, a rare occurrence between the two nations.

The individual’s crossing was confirmed by the South Korean military, stating that it carried out a search operation but was unable to find the person.

“We’ve confirmed that the person crossed the Military Demarcation Line border about 10:40 PM (1340 GMT) and defected to the North,” The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a briefing on Saturday.

Footage of the person climbing a barbed wire fence was captured by South Korean cameras around 6:40 p.m. Saturday, officials said. The breach was not detected until 9:20 p.m. local time. This led the local military to begin a search for the individual. Officials could not confirm if the individual was alive but informed North Korea via a military hotline.

North Korea has not responded to South Korea’s query and has not said anything about the crossing on state media, the JCS claims.

The JCS says that it is still trying to determine the identity of the border-crosser.

Border crossings between North and South Korea are rare and dangerous due to the tense relations between the two nations. The two Korean nations are technically still at war, as the Korean War ended in 1953 with a truce and not a peace treaty. The border, known as the Demilitarized Zone, is bristling with fences, sensors, mines, armed patrols, and troops ready for battle on both sides.
