D.C. police arrested a 20-year-old man in the shooting death of a teenage girl who was holding her infant godson when she was gunned down in Southeast Washington last month.
Police arrested Cordel Lesene, of the 1200 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE, Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder and three counts of assault with intent to kill, according to a Metropolitan Police Department news release. Cynthia Gray, 17, was killed when men in a stolen Cadillac drove up and gunshots were fired into a crowd of teenagers outside 4639 Benning Road SE.
As the bullets flew, Gray placed her 7-month-old godson under a car to protect him, police said. One gunman walked up to Gray and shot her in the face, police said.
Gray, who was to start her senior year at Eastern Senior High School the next week, saved her godson from injury, but three other teenagers were struck with non-life-threatening gunshots.
Detectives could not be reached late Tuesday night for comment.
