Former House Speaker John Boehner said everyone, regardless of their politics, should be grateful for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s leadership.
“Washington in recent years has been described as a place that lurches from crisis to crisis. One person has done more to defuse these crises time and again than any other individual in American government,” Boehner wrote in a profile of McConnell, who was selected as one of Time’s most influential people of 2019.
Boehner commended McConnell’s “mastery of parliamentary procedure” for his efforts in getting two of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, confirmed.
“Whatever your politics or ideological inclinations may be, you and your family have been the beneficiaries of his experienced leadership in a challenging moment in our country’s history. Our nation is blessed by his service and the wisdom he brings to high office,” Boehner wrote.
Boehner, a Republican from Ohio, announced in 2015 he was stepping down in the middle of his term.
