Twitter suppresses Republican congressman’s anime video attacking AOC and Biden

Twitter on Monday suppressed a controversial animated video shared by Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona, which depicts him killing Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and swinging two swords at President Joe Biden.

The video — a digitally altered Japanese anime clip with the faces of Gosar, AOC, and Biden — was intended to attack the Democrats’ agenda, particularly immigration.

Ocasio-Cortez responded to the post on Monday night, saying Gosar will likely “face no consequences” because Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California “cheers him on with excuses.”

Gosar and his staff defended the post, denying claims it encourages violence or is to be taken seriously.

“Everyone needs to relax,” Jessica Lycos, Gosar’s digital director, said in a statement to the Washington Post.

Twitter said Monday that Gosar’s tweet violated content moderation rules around hateful conduct but determined the post was in the “public’s interest,” refraining from banning it altogether.
