Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) blasted Mark Smith, CEO of Smith & Wesson, for not showing up to testify at a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing on Wednesday on the “practices and profits of gun manufacturers.”

Weapons made by the company were used in recent mass shootings, including the Highland Park shooting, Maloney said.

Maloney said Smith “promised he would testify, but then he went back on his word, perhaps because he did not want to take responsibility for the death and destruction his company has caused.”
“The time for dodging accountability is over,” Maloney said, adding she would issue a subpoena for documents from Smith and other company executives.
Video game imagery is also used to sell guns to young people.

At the beginning of the hearing, Maloney said the gun industry should be held accountable for when its products cause damage, like the car or pharmaceutical industries.
