A good judge is hard to find in Baltimore

For Gov. Robert Ehrlich, a good judge is hard to find.

With two Baltimore City Circuit Court judgeships open, Ehrlich asked the Maryland judiciary to readvertise for the positions Monday after deciding that a first crop of applicants didn?t have enough “depth.”

“Basically, the list that was submitted was a little light on number,” said Dyer Bell, a spokesman for Ehrlich.

“The governor is committed to appointing the highest-quality judges to Maryland Circuit Courts, and he was concerned that the depth of number wasn?t there. The governor wants to see as many quality applicants as possible.”

In August, Ehrlich appointed Charles Gerald Bernstein to the Baltimore City Circuit Court to replace retiring Judge Joseph Kaplan.

Now, Ehrlich must appoint two replacements for retiring judges Clifton Gordy and Joseph McCurdy Jr. A nominating commission had recommended six potential judges out of a pool of 15 applicants to Ehrlich before the governor asked for a second advertisement.
