Lawrenceville, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has retired the remaining debt from his failed presidential campaign, Donald Trump told supporters Thursday night at the duo’s second fundraiser of the day.
“You know Chris paid off his entire campaign debt tonight. He’s a great guy and he’s a great governor,” the presumptive Republican presidential nominee told supporters at his first rally to include an entry fee.
Christie, who suspended his campaign in February after back-to-back losses in the earliest two voting states, and New Jersey Republicans reportedly faced more than $500,000 in debt by March, after being forced to cover substantial legal costs related to investigations into the “Bridgegate” scandal.
The Garden State governor teamed up with Trump earlier in the day for a $25,000-per-plate fundraiser that benefitted the New Jersey Republican State Committee. Later on, he and Christie held a rally at the Lawrenceville National Guard Armory for a cheaper, $200 admission fee.
According to local news reports, Christie’s campaign committee still faced $250,000 in debt by Thursday. Trump now claims that figure has been paid off.
Following his rally in New Jersey, Trump will held to Kentucky on Friday to address hundreds of gun owners at the National Rifle Association’s annual leadership conference.
