Rep. Ruben Gallego, a U.S. Marine veteran, blamed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for the deaths of Americans that have been killed by guns because he has not allowed the Senate to vote on gun control.
“The one thing that’s very consistent about Mitch McConnell, he could care less about anybody in this country except for himself and his donors,” Gallego told CNN on Tuesday.
“And he is the Grim Reaper. It’s because of his actions that he’s caused so many deaths in this country by stopping commonsense gun reform laws from getting to the floor,” the Arizona Democrat continued. “The majority of Americans, even the majority of NRA members support a lot of these commonsense initiatives. But, you know, you have people like Mitch McConnell and President Trump that talk a good game after every shooting. But then hope we all forget and go away and then just keep moving on. And that’s unfortunate.”
Gallego said the only way to stop the mass shootings is by getting rid of McConnell as majority leader by voting in more Democrats.
At first nicknamed by Democrats as the “Grim Reaper” by not voting on Democratic-passed legislation, McConnell has proudly embraced the name because he’s killing “socialist” bills.
The House of Representatives passed H.R. 8 earlier this year, which would require universal background checks on gun purchases.
The debate over increasing gun control laws has intensified in the aftermath of three mass shootings in recent weeks that have left more than 30 dead.
