Syria: Reports of missile attack on air base

At least one airstrike hit a military air base in Syria early Monday morning local time, according to multiple news reports.

Al Sura, which is an independent journalist and social media activist platform focused on Iraq and the Middle East, posted a video of Syrian Air Defense intercepting a cruise missile flying over the city of Homs.

Syrian state TV said there were eight cruise missiles intercepted, but “several missiles” did hit the air base.

But the United States military is not behind the reported airstrikes, according to the Pentagon.

“At this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria. However, we continue to closely watch the situation and support the ongoing diplomatic efforts to hold those who use chemical weapons, in Syria and otherwise, accountable,” the Department of Defense said in a statement late Sunday.

The air base that was reportedly struck in Homs is known as the T-4 Airbase, the largest one in Syria.

There have also been unconfirmed reports of dozens of deaths and injuries at the air base.

The White House announced Sunday night that President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed on a “strong, joint response” to Saturday’s deadly reported chemical attack in Douma that killed at least 45 people.

Trump and Macron agreed that Bashar Assad’s regime “must be held accountable for its continued human rights abuses,” the White House said.

Trump took to Twitter earlier in the day Sunday to blame Russia, Iran and “Animal Assad” for the chemical attack, and said there will be a “big price to pay.”
