Let the conspiracy theories begin.
Tim Canova announced on Thursday that he would attempt another primary challenge against Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., in 2018. And it didn’t take long for something odd to happen.
“Announced last night 8pm run vs. @DWStweets again. At 2am my computer was attacked & surge protector fried. Same happened last campaign,” Canova said in a tweet. He didn’t offer any further explanation or proof, and didn’t give any ideas as to who might be behind the technical issue.
Canova lost to Wasserman Schultz in a 2016 primary contest for Florida’s 23rd Congressional District with 43 percent of the vote versus 57 percent, according to Ballotpedia. The August contest represented a sort of rematch of the 2016 presidential primaries as Canova was backed by progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders while Hillary Clinton had endorsed Wasserman Schultz.
If Canova was indeed a victim of a cyberattack, he would share that in common with Wasserman Schultz. The Florida congresswoman had been the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee up until last summer, when she stepped down after WikiLeaks published stolen DNC emails showing that she and other DNC officials worked to undermine Sanders in favor of Clinton.
The Miami Herald notes that Canova waded into some controversy in January when he floated the conspiracy theory that Seth Rich, a former DNC staffer who was murdered last summer, may have been the WikiLeaks source for the DNC leak and that was why he was killed.
Rich “may have been the Wikileaks source of the leaked DNC emails. He was gunned down, assassinated under suspicious circumstances just days after publication of those leaked emails,” Canova said in a Facebook post that is now deleted.
When asked about whether he thinks Rich was the DNC leaker on Thursday, Canova walked back his prior statement, saying “I have no idea” and blamed the media for their portrayal of him on the issue.
Rich’s parents have denied that their son was the DNC leaker and have asked people to stop politicizing his death.
