The District has earned recognition as one of the nation’s friendliest cities for cyclists and pedestrians, the city said Thursday.
The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center has named D.C. as one of 10 cities to earn “gold” status as a Walk Friendly Community. Seattle is the only city in the United States that has earned the highest ranking, platinum.
The center, which receives federal and private funding, awards the designation to jurisdictions that seek to improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians. So far, 33 cities and towns have received the honor.
Mayor Vincent Gray hailed the announcement.
“It validates the work we have already done to promote walking and other clean modes of transportation,” he said in a statement. “It shows we’re on the right path.”
