Three dead after shooting in Austin, suspect identified

At least three people are dead and a suspect has been identified following a shooting incident in Austin, Texas, on Sunday.

Authorities arrived at the scene at around 11:46 a.m. and found three adult victims, two Hispanic females and one black male, who were later pronounced deceased, police revealed during a press conference. The suspect, Stephen Broderick, 41, reportedly knew the victims, police said.

During an afternoon update, Austin Police Department interim Chief Joseph Chacon said a child was involved in the incident but confirmed “the child is safe.”

Broderick, a black male, is at large and considered to be armed and dangerous by authorities. Police encouraged those in the area to keep sheltering in place. Chacon added the search of the area near Great Hills Trail would be elevated to a “fugitive search” as the suspect remains at large.

“I don’t want anyone to think that we are packing up and going home. We are going to continue to look for this individual because he continues to be a threat to this community,” Chacon said.

Preliminary information suggested Broderick could be a former Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective who was accused of sexually assaulting a child in June 2020, according to the Austin American Statesman. Police confirmed to CNN that Sunday’s shooter is the former detective.

“My understanding is that this individual, at one time, was a deputy for the Travis County Sheriff’s office,” Chacon said.

The APD confirmed the incident Sunday afternoon and advised those in the area to “shelter in place,” initially calling it an “active shooter” incident. While prior to the press conference, authorities called it an “isolated” and “domestic situation,” Chacon later said the “danger still remains high.”
