Former Terps star arrested after gunfire heard near White House

Former University of Maryland basketball star and Washington Wizard Lonny Baxter was arrested early Wednesday after shots were fired from a white sport utility vehicle two blocks from the White House, Secret Service agents said.

Baxter, 27, a member of the Terrapins 2002 NCAA championship, was arrested for carrying a pistol without a license, according to a police affidavit.

Secret Service agents stopped Baxter’s white Range Rover about 2:30 a.m., five minutes after they heard two gunshots and a witness told them the shots were fired from a white SUV carrying two black men, according the affidavit.

Police found two shell casings in the back of the Range Rover and a .40-caliber Glock pistol in the center console, according to the affidavit. Police said they found a bullet matching the caliber and characteristics found in the weapon in a building on 17th and K streets.

The passenger, Francis I. Martin, of Hyattsville, was also arrested on the same charges.

Baxter, a native of Silver Spring, played with the Charlotte Bobcats last year, but was no longer with the team, a spokesman said.
