Ted Stevens, a volunteer for Baltimore City State?s Attorney challenger Steve Fogleman, knew the early morning hours of Tuesday?s primary election would be hectic.
But he didn?t know they would also be dangerous.
Stevens was robbed at gunpoint at 3 a.m. as he put up Fogleman campaign signs at George McMechen Middle School in Baltimore.
The mugger approached Stevens, causing the volunteer to run away ? but the mugger chased him down.
“He put a gun in my face and said, ?I?ll shoot you,?” Stevens said. “I never thought I would be that scared. I?m still pretty shook up.”
Stevens, 35, turned over his wallet, which contained $300, to the robber, ran from the scene, and called the police, he said.
Within minutes, police responded to the scene, Stevens said.
“The police were absolutely amazing,” he said. “They were there immediately.”
Fogleman said it?s “ironic” that the campaign of a candidate running for a public safety office would be robbed. “It?s demonstrative of why I?m running for State?s Attorney,” he said. “The city is filled with domestic terrorists.”
After filing a police report, Stevens got back out to continue putting up campaign signs.
“I was more motivated than ever,” he said.
Baltimore police spokesman Ofc. Troy Harris said police are on the lookout for a 5-foot-9-inch 140-pound black male about 18 years old in connection with the mugging.
“We did an area canvass and we haven?t found anything,” he said. “Detectives are looking into it.”
