March Funeral Homes matriarch dies at age 82

Julia Roberta March, co-founder of March Funeral Homes, passed away three days after her 82nd birthday on Tuesday.

In 1957, March and her husband founded what was to become the largest funeral business in Maryland, March Funeral Homes.

In 1973, partnering with three other funeral directors, the March family opened King Memorial Park, a cemetery in Baltimore County catering to the black community. In 1988, the March family expanded King Memorial Park, making it the largest black-owned and operated cemetery in the U.S.

March did more than her share of charity and community work, involving herself in so many organizations that she was honored with a doctorate of humane letters by the Determined Biblical and Theological Institute of Baltimore in 2001.

Public viewing for March is available at the March Funeral Home-East today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the March Funeral Home-West Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
